Al tempo che Atene sotto leggi di equità fioriva,
portò l’arrogante confusione d’ogni libertà fra i cittadini;
poi la licenza il freno antico sciolse.
Allora, poiché sediziose s’erano fatte tra le parti le fazioni,
della fortezza il despota Pisistrato s’impadronì.
Ora, mentre gli Attici la triste sottomissione piangevano,
e già del tiranno cominciavano a dolersi
(non che fosse egli crudele, ma ogni peso è gravoso ai dissueti),
a raccontare così intraprese Esòpo.
Le rane, libere vaganti qua e là fra i pantani,
con gracidio grandioso chiesero a Giove un re
che con vigore i dissoluti costumi moderasse.
Rise il padre degli dèi, e un travicello ad esse diede,
che d’improvviso, dall’alto gettato, con inquietante tonfo
quella paurosa schiatta palustre atterrì.
Poiché nel limo, per parecchio tempo, questo giacque immerso,
una di loro, di nascosto, fuor della pozza il capo sporse,
ed il re interamente esaminato, tutte le altre chiamò a raccolta.
Quelle, abbandonato subito ogni timore, a gara sguazzano,
e come turba petulante sopra il legno si mettono a saltellare.
Quante sozzure gli fecero, e a qual dileggio l’esposero!
Poi, un altro re richiesero a Giove,
adducendo che quello che le era stato concesso era inetto.
Giove mandò così l’idra, che con i denti aguzzi
una ad una comincia ad afferrarle.
Ignobili e senza alcun comune vantaggio,
sbrancano esse qua e là, mentre la paura le faceva tutte silenti.
Si affidarono quindi segretamente a Mercurio,
al fine di ottenere, tanto erano afflitte, da Giove un soccorso.
Ma Iddio loro contraddisse: «Poiché il vostro bene
rifiutaste − disse – alla disgrazia adunque ora sobbarcatevi.
E voi anche, cittadini – aggiunse − questo male, oh,
adesso tenetevi, affinché uno peggiore non ve ne avvenga.

Ranae vagantes liberis paludibus
clamore magno regem petiere a Iove,
qui dissolutos mores vi conpesceret.
Pater deorum risit atque illis dedit
parvum tigillum, missum quod subito vadi
motu sonoque terruit pavidum genus.
Hoc mersum limo cum iaceret diutius,
forte una tacite profert e stagno caput
et explorato rege cunctas evocat.
Illae timore posito certatim adnatant
lignumque supra turba petulans insilit.
Quod cum inquinassent omni contumelia,
alium rogantes regem misere ad Iovem,
inutilis quoniam esset qui fuerat datus.
Tum misit illis hydrum, qui dente aspero
corripere coepit singulas. Frustra necem
fugitant inertes, vocem praecludit metus.
Furtium igitur dant Mercurio mandata ad Iovem,
adflictis ut succurrat. Tunc contra deus:
«Quia noluistis vestrum ferre», inquit, «bonum,
malum perferte. Vos quoque, o cives – ait – hoc
sustinete, maius ne veniat malum».
